Yoh, South Africa! We’ve got load shedding, petrol price hikes, and now you’re telling me we’ve had serial killers too? That’s just not ayoba. In a country where we already have plenty on our plate, these infamous figures have added fear and heartbreak to our history. Here’s a look at some of the most notorious serial killers who shocked our nation with their heinous crimes.
Moses Sithole – The ABC Killer (1994-1995)
This guy was a proper skelm. Operating during the mid-’90s, Moses Sithole earned the nickname “The ABC Killer” because his crimes took place in Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland. Over the course of a year, Sithole claimed the lives of at least 38 women, luring them with promises of jobs before committing his atrocities.
He was caught in 1995, and his conviction remains one of the most significant in South African history. Sithole was sentenced to 2,410 years in prison, ensuring he’ll never see the light of day again. Good riddance!
Cedric Maake – The Hammer Killer (1996-1997)
Cedric Maake terrorized Johannesburg with a unique and horrifying MO. Known as “The Hammer Killer”, he bludgeoned his victims to death with tools, primarily a hammer. Imagine being that brutal!
Maake’s spree lasted for about a year, during which he murdered 27 people and committed numerous robberies and assaults. He was arrested in 1997 and sentenced to 1,340 years in prison. Clearly, Maake wasn’t afraid to go bos, but the justice system made sure he’d stay behind bars for life.
Elifasi Msomi – The Axe Killer (1950s)
Elifasi Msomi’s chilling story goes way back to the 1950s. Claiming he was possessed by spirits, he brutally murdered 15 people using an axe, mainly in rural KwaZulu-Natal. Msomi believed he needed to kill to gain supernatural powers, which makes this story even creepier.

Thankfully, this monster’s reign ended when he was captured, tried, and executed in 1955. Hawu, it’s safe to say South Africa breathed a sigh of relief after that.
Gert van Rooyen – The Child Abductor (1980s)
This case still haunts South Africa. Gert van Rooyen and his accomplice, Joey Haarhoff, were responsible for the disappearance of at least six young girls during the late 1980s. Their method? Grooming and abducting victims under the guise of kindness.

Their reign of terror ended abruptly in 1990 when van Rooyen shot himself after a police chase. To this day, the whereabouts of their victims remain a mystery, leaving families heartbroken.
Jimmy Maketta – The Jesus Killer (2005)
Jimmy Maketta earned the chilling nickname “The Jesus Killer” due to his self-proclaimed religious motivations. Operating in Philippi, Western Cape, he brutally murdered 16 men and raped multiple women in 2005.

He was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to life imprisonment. South Africans were left shaking their heads, wondering what could drive someone to such extremes.
Norman Afzal Simons – The Station Strangler (1986-1994)
Norman Simons, known as “The Station Strangler”, is believed to have abducted and murdered 21 young boys in the Western Cape. Most of the victims were found buried in shallow graves, sparking panic in communities.
Although he was convicted of only one murder in 1995, many believe he was behind the others. Simons has since been granted Parole.
Being a Serial Killer in SA? Not Ayoba!
Sho, bafethu, as if we don’t already have enough to deal with. From Eskom struggles to potholes that look like swimming pools, serial killers are the last thing South Africans want to stress about. These stories are a grim reminder of the dark side of humanity, but they also highlight the resilience of our justice system and communities.
Let’s keep our eyes open, protect each other, and make sure that any potential skelms know this country has no space for such horrors. In South Africa, we’re about ubuntu, not ukuhlanya!
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and let’s keep it lekker! Stay informed with YDW.
