It’s just after 4 pm on Sunday, 20 July 2025, and the energy inside the Cape Town International Convention Centre is electric, all adrenaline, sweat and sheer determination. There are no elite athletes here. Just everyday South Africans pushing their limits in what’s being called “the world’s fittest race for the rest of us.”
What is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a global competitive fitness race that fuses endurance with functional strength. Born in Hamburg, Germany, the event has taken off in Europe and the US; now, South Africa is getting in on the action. The format? Eight 1 km runs, each followed by a brutal workout station. Think sledge pushes, farmer’s carries, rowing, and rope pulls, rinse and repeat.
Hyrox hits Cape Town
This was only Cape Town’s second-ever Hyrox since the SA debut in 2024, and the turnout was wild. Over the weekend of 19–20 July, the CTICC turned into a full-on fitness festival. DJs spun between heats, spectators lined the course, and local gyms rocked up in their branded kits, ready to cheer or compete.
A last-minute decision
Among the first-timers were siblings Stacey and Justin Barth, who signed up on a whim. “It was completely last-minute,” Stacey said. “I’m on holiday in Cape Town and saw a banner at the Convention Centre. I messaged a few friends, and my brother was the first to say yes. So we just went for it. Mixed Doubles!”
It might’ve been spontaneous, but it wasn’t totally reckless. Stacey’s no stranger to fitness; she runs regularly and hits the gym often. “I’d seen Hyrox on Instagram and thought, ‘Why not?’ The energy around it was contagious.”
“I winged it”
Despite the intensity of the race, Stacey didn’t train specifically. “I definitely winged it. But I’ve got a solid fitness base. Running gives me stamina, and strength training helps me push through.”
Her biggest concern? “That constant back-and-forth between cardio and strength. Running a full kilometre between each station seemed wild. But I was more excited than anything.”
Naturally, friends and family were a little stunned. “They were concerned! People train for months, and I was like, ‘We’re doing this on Saturday.’ But that made it exciting, the thrill of it.”

Inside the arena
Walking into the venue, Stacey was floored. “The vibe was insane. It was so well-organised, and it felt international, like we were part of something bigger.”
Her toughest station? “Definitely the rope pull. Not so much the weight, but the control and technique. It caught me off guard.”
But mentally, she never wavered. “Surprisingly, no. I was in it the whole way. The crowd helped, and having my brother there kept me grounded.”
Her parents and sister-in-law came to support. “Seeing them in the crowd meant a lot. And we kept bumping into people we knew, which made it feel like a community.”
There were light moments too. “My brother and I kept teasing each other about our form. Laughter really helped break the tension.”
The finish line
After 1 hour and 53 minutes, they crossed the line. “It felt surreal, proud, sweaty, and kind of shocked at how well we did. People train for ages to finish this.”
And it left a mark. “I learned that I’m stronger than I think. When I trust my body and my mindset, I can do hard things.”
Would she do it again? “Absolutely. I’d train properly next time. Maybe shoot for a faster time or try a different division.”
Go-to recovery meal? “Protein shake. Something greasy and carb-loaded. I earned that.”

More than just fitness
For Stacey, Hyrox was more than just a race. “It’s about taking a leap when something scares you. It’s also about community, seeing all kinds of people show up and push through was incredible.”
Being part of the event’s early wave in SA made it even more meaningful. “You can tell it’s going to blow up here. It felt special to be in it this early.”
Her advice to anyone considering it? “If you’re fairly active and love a challenge, do it. You don’t have to be an elite athlete, just pace yourself and enjoy the ride.”
The real flex
In a world where fitness can feel individual or isolating, Hyrox brings people together. It’s not about podiums, it’s about showing up, digging deep, and crossing that finish line. And honestly? That’s the real flex.
